Have students sign a “Computer Use Agreement” before giving them access to machines to hold them accountable for using computers responsibly.

  • For a sample, take a look at this Computer Use Agreement.
  • Depending on their backgrounds, students may not know why certain behaviors are inappropriate or risky around computers, and so may need those rules and expectations made very explicit.
    • For example, it is common for students to be allowed to drink water at their desks during most of their classes, so they may be surprised or frustrated to learn that that is not allowed in the computer lab if the reasons are not explained to them at the beginning of the course.
  • Revisit your computer use agreement after your course is completed and revise it based on what you’ve learned about student behavior or the nature of your computing resources.
