Have the student who is most comfortable with the material start as navigator to ensure that both students get the most out of pair programming.

  • Although the more comfortable student is likely capable of completing the assignment on their own, as the navigator they will deepen their own understanding of the material by explaining it to the less comfortable student.
  • Encourage students to share their knowledge with one another to benefit their learning and communication.
  • If the more comfortable student starts as the driver, then the less comfortable student will not learn as much from the pair-programming activity.
  • This strategy ensures that all students get a chance to build on their understanding of the material.
